Crowd Counting Consortium 2025 U.S. Protest Event Data

The Crowd Counting Consortium (CCC) is a collaborative project between Harvard University and University of Connecticut that has systematically collected data on political protest events across the United States since January 2017. The dataset encompasses rallies, marches, demonstrations, and acts of civil disobedience that articulate grievances against or express support for political targets.

The dataset includes events that are open to the public, free of charge, and nonviolent (not primarily organized to cause direct harm to persons). Coverage extends to all U.S. states and territories, with no minimum crowd size requirement. Virtual gatherings are included alongside physical events, reflecting the evolution of collective action especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Excluded are activities like paid fundraisers, workshops, campaign events closed to the public, and routine government meetings unless deliberately disrupted by protesters.RetryClaude can make mistakes. Current dataset includes data from January 2025 to May 2025.

Protest Activity Over Time

This line chart shows the cumulative number of protests logged by the Crowd Counting Consortium from January 2025 to May 2025. The steady upward trend demonstrates the continuous occurrence of protest events across the United States, with the slope indicating the rate of protest activity over this period.

Interactive Protest Map

This interactive map visualization shows the geographic distribution of protests across the United States. Use the date scrubber below to explore how protest locations change day by day. The size of each circle represents the reported crowd size, and you can hover over points to see the specific location and attendance figures. This demonstrates Observable’s reactive capabilities - as you change the date, the map automatically updates to show only protests from that day.

Protests by State

This bar chart ranks U.S. states by their total number of recorded protest events during the January-May 2025 period. The visualization helps identify which states had the highest levels of protest activity, providing insights into regional patterns of political engagement and collective action.

Protest Activity Calendar

This calendar heatmap reveals temporal patterns in protest activity, showing which days had higher or lower numbers of events. Each cell represents a day, with color intensity indicating the number of protests. This visualization makes it easy to spot patterns like weekends vs. weekdays, specific dates with unusually high activity, or sustained periods of increased protest frequency.
