

{"id":633,"date":"2011-11-14T14:17:54","date_gmt":"2011-11-14T19:17:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rud.is\/b\/?p=633"},"modified":"2017-03-27T09:40:06","modified_gmt":"2017-03-27T14:40:06","slug":"dnschanger-detector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rud.is\/b\/2011\/11\/14\/dnschanger-detector\/","title":{"rendered":"DNSChanger Detector"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The FBI made a <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.fbi.gov\/check-to-see-if-your-computer-is-using-rogue-DNS\">tool<\/a> to help you determine if you were a victim of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/fbi-tackles-dnschanger-malware-scam\/\">DNSChanger<\/a> malware.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re like many casual Internet users, you have <i>no idea<\/i> how to get the information to plug into the input box. <\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the security model of most modern browsers makes it impossible to easily retrieve this information. However, it <i>is<\/i> possible to grab the DNS entries if the user is willing to trust the requesting source.<\/p>\n<p>To help make it easier to determine if you&#8217;re infected, I wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/rud.is\/dns.html\">DNSChanger Detector<\/a>. It&#8217;s a small Java applet that requires the user to allow it to have privileged access to the DNS entries via a call to <code>sun.net.dns.ResolverConfiguration<\/code> to get the nameservers. Once it has them, there is some jQuery glue in place to let Javascript access the results.<\/p>\n<p>I understand why the FBI didn&#8217;t attempt to go this route, but it will hopefully be useful to folks who don&#8217;t wish to walk their friends and family through the process.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The FBI made a tool to help you determine if you were a victim of the DNSChanger malware.
